Remix: Space Oddity

To coincide with the 40th anniversary of the single ‘Space Oddity,’ and to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings, EMI in 2009 released a special digital EP featuring four different versions of the song and eight mono multitrack stems from the recording session.

According to David Bowie’s website, the reason the stems were released was so fans could have the chance to create their own remix of the song.

Apparently, I missed news of this release back in 2009 because, up until last October, I wasn’t even aware the digital EP existed. (Unless I did hear about it and then forgot to download it, which is also just as likely.)

I started fiddling around with the stems in Audition late last year, but due to work and other commitments, it just kind of fell by the wayside and I never finished anything.

After David Bowie passed away last month, I tried messing around with the stems again to see if I could finish something that sounded half decent.

It’s not an acoustic remix, as there’s a Mellotron, stylophone, and electric guitar in it, but there is no drums or bass guitar.

I don’t really know what you could call it, remix-wise. It’s not totally different, as I wanted to see if I could make it sound, sorta, like the original.

Sorta different? Sorta the same? Whatever? Who cares?

What’s Going On, A Remix

Crop of the cover to Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album for remix post.

A few years ago I came across mono multi-tracks for the Marvin Gaye classic “What’s Going On” and decided to make my own remix of it. I spent a few days on-and-off mixing it and adding reverb and compression before I finally arrived at a sound I liked.

I have posted this here before (about a year or two ago) but I decided to dive back into Audition and re-export it as a newer higher quality file with a tighter mix.

I originally put it together back in 2011. My post from the other day of the Apollo/David Bowie video I edited got me thinking about other stuff I have done for fun over the years. (And that’s why I’m posting this today.) Expect some more posts to come over the next little while as I locate more old crap I’ve done.

You can listen to the remix below! (Or download. Whatever ya wanna do.)

You can purchase the original version here: Amazon – iTunes.

Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (MT Remix)

In September of 2011 I came across the mono multitracks for Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” (someone had put them on the internet somehow, there were 15 files so I think some weren’t included) and to test my audio editing chops I decided to take them and make my own alternate mix of the song.

This is how it came out. It’s hosted on Soundcloud, so the audio quality is, eh, a bit lower bit-rate then the original file. I was going to just host it here, but WordPress makes you buy a storage upgrade to do that. I will be buying a domain and hosting service soon (Bluehost!) so I can do whatever the hell I want with this blog. Which is when I will have to decide whether or not to keep mtblog.ca connected to my tumblr, or have it move over here… I have a lot of old links connected to the Tumblr, so I think I’ll just buy a new .ca for this blog. mtblog2.ca? mtwordpress.ca? Suggestions?

Anyway, here it is.
